June, 2006 - Hurricane Ivan Damage has Been Repaired!

After Almost Two Years...

It has been almost two years since that eventful night in 2004.  The pedestrian bridge
has been replaced.  The Silver Creek Tunnel has been updated with a modular concrete
structure and Depot Street is now open to traffic.  And at long last, the Hellertown
Pool has re-opened much to the delight of its patrons!  As a way of continuing my efforts
at chronicling this story, I have made many visits to the site and taken pictures during the
various stages of reconstruction.  Below, you will see these pictures grouped in
chronological stages.  Please click the thumbnail to open the large picture in a separate

The anniversary pictures have an 'antique postcard' look.  This is due to a characteristic
of the developed, 35mm photos that made it hard for them to be scanned with the best clarity.
I processed the scanned images a lot to make them more presentable.

When they demolished the Depot Street Tunnel, they dumped the rubble in
the area of the Thomas Iron Works right next to Saucon Creek.  I just recently
discovered this while doing some photographic research for the effort to preserve
the Cinder Banks from development

When I took the second anniversary pictures, I noticed what appears to be leaks at the bottom of the
seams of the tunnel structure.  I haven't been down there since I took the pictures so I don't
know if the situation has changed.  I'm fairly sure that this leaking could lead to undercutting
and structural damage if not repaired.  I believe that the Borough of Hellertown is already aware
of this problem but I'll remind them if I still see the leaks the next time I go down there.

Future Updates

No updates are planned at this time.  I've been working on this project for two years
and don't see the need for updates unless there are new but related issues that arise.  I
would also probably update this page if someone wanted to include their images in a
"Friends' Gallery" section.  I might possibly start a new and unrelated project for the
Cinder Banks (Thomas Iron Works) issue that's going on right now in Hellertown.
Please e-mail me me in case you have any suggestions or questions.
